An Adaptive Measure of Household Affordability

The Basic Necessity Percentage

Developed by Alter’s Department of Research, a Basic Necessity Percentage (“BNP”) is a number representing a household’s current lifetime necessity affordability. Basic needs expenses are a key but often overlooked feature of a household’s budget.

In creating the BNP, Alter believes that it is not only imperative to know what this number is today, but it will efficiently assist households in financial planning and monthly prioritizing of basic needs for long-term sufficiency. As a result, household BNPs are encouraged to be evaluated every four (4) years.

Alter has been successful in applying its BNP formula as an alternative affordable shelter threshold. With BNPs, a household-specific shelter amount can be derived, offering households a maximum rent or mortgage dollar value that can be comfortably afforded based on income and supply constraints.

Soon the ability to calculate a household’s BNP will be made available to the public and offered through the Alter website. Check later to calculate yours.

To date, we have completed 2,000,000 household evaluations!

totm

Developed by Alter’s Department of Innovation, totm is a perfect companion for menstruation and incontinence management.

totm underwear comes in a variety of sizes, styles and colors and can be worn as a substitute for traditional management products with no additional hygiene supplements required.

totm is made from a 55% bamboo viscose and 45% hemp blend with a gusset/lining made of organic cotton and a bamboo fleece blend.

At the moment, Alter is hard at work on a myriad of proposals to make our creations publicly available and easily accessible. We are always looking to form partnerships with people, organizations and communities striving to build a better and more equitable world.
